Good evening friends! We had a LONG day at the hospital today seeing the kidney doctors. They weighed Brianna in at 50 lbs., and measured her to be 4’2. She is a tiny girl because her kidneys have not let her grow properly. After reviewing charts and statistics with the dietitian, she suggested that Brianna start taking daily growth hormone shots for several years! You should have seen Brianna’s face! Poor child looked scared to death to hear she may have to get a shot every day! We were already there today for her to get an Epogen shot to increase her red blood cells because she is highly anemic. She also had her blood drawn to test her Creatinine level again. She did remarkably well and we should have those results in a few days. Her blood pressure was at a good level so I guess her medication is working well. Woohoo!

As far as the growth hormone shots, I need to do some research. The doctor is supposed to email me information and wait for my decision. I asked if they would need to be started right away, or if she can start them in a year or two. She just said that Brianna would lose out on 1-2 years of growth that way. Is anyone familiar with this? When does it end??? I am 5’2 and her dad is 6’1 so I figured she might turn out to be around 5’4 or so since she is on the short side anyway. The doctor said that looking at her growth pattern, she may not get above 4’9 if she doesn’t take the hormone shots. Hmmm. What to do, what to do!

Many of you may know that Brianna’s dog broke her leg in December, one week after we got her, by jumping off a chair. She has been in a cast ever since and today she got her cast removed and is now in a bandaged splint. I guess that’s progress. Poor little doggie . The veterinarians are amazing at Broadview Animal Clinic and we are very grateful to them!

Things may have gone a little awry, but we can thank God that things are not any worse than they are!

$$$ Anyone who has gone through treatment of cancer or any other disease knows how difficult it is to maintain normal finances. I missed work all of last week, along with over 20 days this school year that she has been sick or has had migraines to the point where the school called me to come get her, or she couldn’t go at all in the first place. I took her to the doctor today, have to take her again tomorrow, and to see 3 more doctors next week. When am I supposed to work? How am I supposed to pay my bills and buy groceries? I am going to a food bank on Thursday. Glad to see there is some help out there! As I am keeping my faith strong and waiting for God to provide, I am still getting nervous and scared. Having a child with an illness creates many challenges without very many resources! Is there anyone out there who knows where to get assistance for these specific issues? I have administrative skills, am good with the internet, grammar, writing, data entry, resume writing, etc. I also have a background in Property and Casualty insurance. If you know of anyone or any business that I could work for from home, please let me know! I can’t possibly work a job with a regular schedule, then ask for so many days off. I am just not in the kind of situation and NEED flexibility. Please, if anyone can offer any help, please contact me. Thank you again for all of your support!

She is not looking forward to the hospital visits tomorrow, to insert a new catheter and Wednesday for a shot to raise her red blood cells. It definitely isn’t fun but it is what we need to do. She is doing very well at taking 4 pills per day and will be getting weekly shots. She was very nauseous and hot last night but didn’t register as having a fever. One of the side effects of her blood pressure medicine is something like “hot flashes”. The nausea is another one . But she is eating and drinking well and watching a lot of movies. Still good news for now! Yay!

Good afternoon. We both got a good night’s rest and feel so much better today. Brianna’s foley catheter some how fell out this morning which is odd because it is supposed to have a balloon inflated inside of her to keep it in. We have put it back in and taped it to her abdomen for now and will have to go back to the hospital on Tuesday to get a new one put in. Also, she woke with a rash on her arm where the IV was and a rash with larger bumps on her leg where the dialysis tube was. Just got off the phone with a doctor who thinks she is allergic to the adhesive on the tape they used on her. Who knows? I was just told to clean her skin with nail polish remover to remove any adhesive left on her. Nail polish remover? Really? Seems harsh.

Other than those things, Brianna is adjusting well. She has become so good at taking her medication and is in good spirits. Yay!!!!! She is such a sweetheart!

They all brought beautiful gifts and we are so grateful for the support! Her teacher, Miss Shoemaker brought cards for her from all of the kids in her class, and from the staff at Vassar Elementary along with many gifts/activities for her to do while at home. We are very touched by your thoughtfulness and Brianna said “Wow! I didn’t know people were so caring”! She has just finished reading all of her cards and is so surprised and happy!

Times like these are very difficult for the whole family, as we experienced before with her cancer. Support means more than you all may ever realize. Brianna is an extremely strong girl and will smile all the way through again but I am sure she gets some of her strength from the support she receives from family and friends. We thank you very much for being the wonderful people you are, and sharing it with us. Thanks!!!!!!!!
